
FamilySearch is free, so I check its online resources EVERY TIME I have a question. With, I make sure I use the card catalog and search by location tool (scroll down to the map) so I’m not missing all the record sets that don’t automatically jump to the top of the general search results.

Which paid sites do you regularly use? Which free sites do you use? Your books have a plethora of suggestions but the pool of resources is increasing by the day. Why visit a site that only offers a select subset of the data that I access through Ancestry? If I have , would I gain anything by subscribing to FindMyPast? MyHeritage? FamilySearch? The National Archives or the BLM sites? I am concerned about wasting money on redundancy. Where should you spend your time and money? While money is always a factor, I find that my time is a more precious resource. Then there are some of the free resources like the National Archives and the LDS resources. Your books identify dozens of other resources that all sound good - and cost money. Of course, you likewise can use multiple websites (and I encourage you to do so!). My personal favourite is WikiTree (it's easier to fix an interface than fixing community or changing business models. My own familiarity is mainly with FamilySearch, WikiTree, Ancestry, and Geni. I occasionally subscribe to Ancestry intermittently (usually for a month at a time) to gain access to useful records, which I then download and save locally on my laptop (plus cloud backups). I guess that the key question is* what you want out of a genealogy website?* Personally I use several, each for different purposes.

It's a small gesture but seriously, respect peoples' time & effort in helping you out. It's perfectly OK to ask for any info if you're looking for fresh leads, but you can help people to focus their efforts & look at the correct sources if you are more specific.
